New Delhi: On the day of Raksha Bandhan, a video of digital content creator Ritu Patel is becoming increasingly viral on social media. Ritu has alleged that after coming to Delhi from Chandigarh, she had booked a Rapido cab to go to Terminal-1 of IGI Airport. The fare was shown on the app as Rs 353, but the driver asked for an additional Rs 200. According to Ritu, when she refused to pay the extra amount, the driver refused to take her to the airport.
While sharing a 59-second video on Instagram, Ritu said that the cab was about 100 meters away from her location. Meanwhile, the driver called and asked her to give additional Rs 200. When he asked the reason for this, the driver said it was 'departure charge'. Ritu claims that the driver said that this fee is not visible in the app but is charged to the customers.
According to Ritu, she clearly told the driver that she would pay only Rs 353 shown on the app. After this the driver refused to accompany him and asked him to cancel the cab. Ritu told that after this she cancelled the booking. According to her, during this entire experience she felt that if she had agreed with the driver, she would have had to pay more than the fixed fare.
After this, Ritu booked another cab and also asked the new driver about the 'departure charge' of the airport. According to her, the other driver denied that there was any such extra charge. Ritu claimed in the video that the second driver told her that the first driver had tried to take extra money by giving wrong information.
Ritu says that after this incident, she became worried as to how many passengers on a daily basis would consider the driver's demand to be justified and pay extra money. For this reason, she shared the video on social media and tagged Rapido and appealed to pay attention to the matter. She said that the purpose of making her experience public was to alert other passengers also.
After the video surfaced, reactions from social media users also started coming. Some people termed it the driver's fault and said that the company should keep an eye on its driver partners. At the same time, some users shared their experiences of airport-related cab booking and claimed that they too have been asked for extra money on different occasions. However, these reactions are based on personal experience and social media comments.
Ritu Patel has complained by tagging Rapido in her post, but till the time of publishing the report, there was no official response from the company on this particular allegation. Therefore, the incident of demanding Rs 200 in the name of 'departure charge' is currently being seen as an allegation by Ritu.
This case once again raises the question of the difference between the fare shown in app-based cab services and the additional amount demanded by the driver on the spot. It is important for passengers to check the details of any additional charges first through the app or through the official website of the company. If the driver asks for a different amount than the agreed fare, passengers can report to the company's official complaint channel by handling booking, chat or payment records.
